Movies

Description:

This is a great theme if your Guest of Honor is a movie buff - you know, the kind that actually knows who won all those other Oscars besides Best Picture.  You might follow up the party with a trip to a real movie theater to catch the latest blockbuster.

You can do a single movie, such as Gone with the Wind or something else - perhaps the Guest of Honor's favorite romantic flick.  Or you can do a more general theme:  Movie Weddings, Movie Babies, Movie Kisses...

Decorations:

There are lots of easy movie related decorations, along with some you might have to work for.  Look in card shops and gift stores for Clackers - those black and white boards that they write the scene on - or black megaphones like directors used for old movies.  If you are creative, you can make these out of large sheet of black construction paper.  Directors chairs are useful mood setters also - you can pretend by using folding chairs with star's names taped to the backs.  Make sure you do one for the Guest of Honor!  Dress in a jacket like an old-timey theater usher.  Carry a flashlight to find seats for people.  You can ask at movie theaters or video stores for old movie promotional posters.  Stick these up on the walls inside or outside the shower location.  You can also stand video tapes upright on shelves.   If you want to go all out, see if you can get a picture of the couple together or the very pregnant Mommy-to-be, then create a movie poster around it.  You can blow it up to poster sized at your local Kinko's, then give that to the Guest of Honor.

You can include tickets with the invitations, then ask the folks to bring the tickets to gain entry to the "theater" - then use the tickets to give out a door prize!

Invitations/Prizes:

You can make the invitations look like large movie theater tickets, or use a graphic of a scene from the movie in question. Give the party location a theatrical name. That poster you made of the Guest of Honor can be used in a smaller form for an invitation also.

For game prizes, give out movie passes or a video rental certificate along with a couple of sodas.  Copies of the movie of the moment are also good.

Food:

Think movie theater snacks here.  Serve up bowls or boxes of traditional movie theater fare - Junior Mints, Goobers, Twizzlers, JuJuBes, etc.  You can even make a batch of popcorn for that real movie theater atmosphere.  There are places that will sell you some of the cardboard boxes or bags that popcorn is served in, or you can ask your local theater for a few.

A great-looking clacker cake can be made from a simple sheet cake.  Slice off a two inch strip from the long side of the cake, set it at a slight angle to the rest of the cake, then decorate in black (or dark chocolate) and white icing.
