Family Quilt

Preparation Time:  Months

Duration:  30 Minutes

Ingredients needed: Family and Friends, quilt materials

This activity requires a LOT of preplanning and time.  A friend of mine introduced me to this concept, as both of her sisters have received handmade quilts from their families as wedding presents.  The quilts were made in portions by family members and friends of the bride and groom and the quilt was presented to the happy couple at their wedding reception.

Preparation

As I said, this was introduced to me by a friend, so all of my experience with this is second hand, but here's what I know:  Months before the wedding, the Mother of the Bride planned out a simple pattern for a quilt, made from squares of material.  Each square was sent to a family member or friend of the bride or groom, with instructions.  The instructions asked that the family member design and embroider (or cross-stitch) a square for the quilt with something memorable for the bride or groom.  Some folks created scenes from old photos, or favorite movie themes or even a simple Love design with the names and date.

Each of the squares had to be sent back to the Mother of the Bride by a certain date, so that she could arrange their order, and have them put together into a quilt.  A professional quilter was found to do this.
